Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite times to get cooking with my kids! There’s nothing better than a special treat for the whole family to enjoy on this holiday full of love. If you are looking to enjoy a quiet night at home, this Valentine’s Day recipe for heart shaped calzones can be a great way to celebrate the little loves in your life as well as get them involved in the cooking! My kids love making these almost as much as they like eating them.
Tools needed:
- Heart shaped cookie cutter about the size of your hand
- Cookie sheet
- Parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Fork
Ingredients:
- Pizza dough (premade is easier but homemade is great too)
- Flour
- Pizza sauce or marinara
- mozzarella cheese
- Pizza toppings (ie pepperoni, sausage, peppers, etc)
- Butter
Recipe:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Roll out dough with some flour sprinkled on the surface you are working on.
- Use heart shaped cookie cutter to get an even number of hearts. Place hearts on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.
- Spread pizza/marinara sauce on top of half of the dough hearts. Leave a small edge without sauce for sealing the calzone.
- Add cheese and toppings
- Top each heart with a dough heart that doesn’t have sauce and toppings on it.
- Use a fork to seal the two pieces of dough together.
- Melt butter and brush on top of each calzone.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes.
- Enjoy!
** Note: If you want to make pizzas instead of calzones, cover all of the hearts with sauce and toppings. Bake for about 10-12 minutes.
We don’t expect perfection! Getting kids involved with this Valentine’s Day recipe is all about having fun in the kitchen together and getting to enjoy the end product. Whether you are planning to go out with a special someone or enjoy the holiday with the whole family, we’d love to hear how you’re choosing to celebrate this year!
