Why College Is Worth It — for Your Whole Family
Parents today are weighing big questions about college:
-
Is it affordable?
-
Will it lead to a good career?
-
Is there a path that makes sense for my child?
For many families, community college has become one of the smartest ways to build a future without taking on overwhelming debt. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers with an associate degree typically earn more and face lower unemployment rates than workers with only a high school diploma. In 2024, associate degree holders earned about 18% more in median weekly pay. At
MCC Expands Opportunities in Months, Not Years
MCC works closely with employers across Central Texas to develop programs that meet local workforce needs. As the Waco region continues to grow, so does demand for trained professionals in healthcare, technology, logistics, education, and skilled trades.
- Nursing, Surgical Technology, Respiratory Care Technology, and Medical Assistant
- Cybersecurity, Computer Information Systems, and Multimedia Technology
- Supply Chain & Operations Management and Logistics
- Early Childhood Education and Child Development
MCC helps students choose a path that fits their goals. For example, the Business Administration & Management pathway allows students to start with a short-term certificate in Management & Business in as little as one semester, continue toward an associate degree in Business Administration or Business Management, or a bachelor’s degree through partners like Tarleton State University or Texas Tech University. These options prepare students for roles such as bookkeeper, administrative assistant, accounting clerk, store manager, human resources specialist and project or quality manager. This kind of pathway gives students the flexibility to enter the workforce sooner or keep going toward higher-paying career opportunities.
Some programs, like MCC’s Dental Assistant program, can be completed in months, not years, allowing students to enter the workforce quickly while fulfilling critical community needs.
Many MCC workforce programs also provide scholarship or grant opportunities to help reduce costs for students.

Community College Is More Affordable Than Ever
Families are looking for ways to avoid overwhelming student debt. MCC helps students save thousands while still building valuable career skills or preparing to transfer to a university.
- At MCC, in-county tuition is just $122 per semester credit hour, with average annual tuition and fees around $3,660 — significantly lower than most four-year universities.
- Many students decrease expenses even further through financial aid, scholarships, and workforce grants.
MCC offers options in learning formats and programs, while saving students thousands as they work on a bachelor’s degree or career credential. Nearly 7 in 10 community college students work while attending school, making affordability and flexible course options more important than ever.
First in the Family — Not the Last
For many families, college becomes more than a personal achievement — it changes what future generations believe is possible. This past spring, Michelle Babbs and her daughter, Jemiyah Babbs graduated from MCC together—both earning associate degrees. Michelle attended classes while balancing work and family responsibilities, while Jemiyah began earning college credits through dual credit and the Upward Bound program before graduating high school. Their story is proof that one family member’s courage to pursue education can inspire an entire household.
When one student earns a college credential, it changes what future generations believe is possible.
Nearly half of MCC students are first-generation college students, and for many families, navigating college for the first time can feel overwhelming
From tutoring and academic coaching to financial aid guidance and transfer support, MCC offers resources designed to help students feel supported from day one through completion.
Family Support Changes Student Success
Parents do not need all the answers to make a difference. Research consistently shows that students are more likely to succeed in college when they feel supported by their families.
How to Support Your Student
- Ask questions together. Attend an orientation or campus event together.
- Celebrate progress, not just graduation. Finishing a tough semester, earning a certification, or simply registering for the next term all deserve recognition.
- Stay curious and encourage persistence. Ask about classes and what they’re learning. It signals that their education matters to you.
Families want reassurance that education leads somewhere—and at MCC, about 94% of graduates either enter the workforce or continue their education.
Every family’s college journey looks different. Whether your student is exploring options after high school or you are considering returning to school yourself, MCC offers flexible and affordable paths designed for real life.
