Together for Good

Together for Good (TFG) is a non-profit organization that creates pathways for families to come alongside vulnerable children and families in Christ-centered ministry.

We know there are many families in our community facing crises without a support system. Social isolation makes parents vulnerable, increasing the risk of potential trauma for children.  TFG believes no family should walk through life alone and strives to keep families safely together by providing an intentional, committed community.

TFG needs families to serve as volunteers.  There are three primary ways volunteers serve and help families in the TFG program: Hosting, Advocacy, and Wrap-Around Support.

Our volunteers provide care to help to stabilize families so they can move beyond a
crisis.

Hosting

Volunteers host children during a crisis (also called emergency hosting’s).  Volunteers open their homes to care for children from one day to one year. We also set up regular respite hosting’s for TFG participant families. During these hosting’s, volunteers care for children for shorter periods (typically a weekend). Usually, these hosting’s occur every 4-8 weeks with the same host family to build trust with the participants.

Parent Advocates

Parent Advocates build an intentional friendship with participant parents, such as providing meals, helping with home organization, or simply being a listening ear.

Wrap – Around Support

Volunteers who help meet the practical needs of parents such as transportation, delivering
essential items, and providing tangible needs are support volunteers.  The families we serve (called participants) have a variety of backgrounds, but nearly all are single
mothers and many grew up in foster care.

Typically, participant parents are facing a combination of the following crises: chronic stress, job loss, unstable housing, trauma, mental health struggles, medical diagnosis, or legal difficulties.

The combination of dealing with crises and parenting can be overwhelming, and many parents refuse to seek treatment or safety.  At TFG, we want to empower parents to
not only care for their children well but also have the ability to care for themselves and look towards the future with hope.

In December of 2023, Anna had her first baby, a little boy named Alexander, and did
not have any relational support in her life. Anna made the decision to flee a domestic violence situation and prioritize safety for herself and her new baby.  Given the nature of the domestic violence, Child Protective Services (CPS) was involved, yet they were hoping to close the case as Anna was seeking help and resources.  CPS wanted to ensure Anna had a strong support system around her as she cared for Alexander.  At TFG, we began by pairing Anna up with a parent advocate. Her parent advocate quickly became a friend and encouragement. Once CPS officially closed the case, we paired Anna with two host families from one of our partner churches.

In just a few short weeks, Anna went from being a new mother without anyone to rely on to being surrounded by a network of care from volunteers who poured out an extravagant amount of love and support on her and baby Alexander.

Having support gave Anna the ability to secure employment and housing.  She shared that the respite hosting’s provided by Alexander’s host families have helped her feel emotionally and mentally healthy.

Anna’s story is just one of the many families who have received support and community from volunteers in Waco.

Through TFG, families are being shown that they are not alone and are being given hope for their future. Make a difference and consider volunteering and partner with Together for Good.
