Ode to the Working Mom

Oh, working mama, with coffee in hand,
Running on fumes, but still in command.
Alarms alarming before dawn,
Lunches packed. Backpacks, check. The bus is gone!

Emails stacking, deadlines near,
Toddler’s screaming in your ear.
But from your oldest, “Mom, I need a poster for my project today!”
A poster, a project before work? But you’ll find a way.

Meetings, memos, conference calls,
Spilled milk, Legos, and stickers stuck to walls.
Signing permission slips and reading logs from the car.
Multitasking, a battle of mind and heart at war.

Google Calendar, your guiding light,
You’re still double booked, an oversight
Dinner’s takeout again, the laundry’s high,
I’ve dropped the ball, but too tired to cry.

Yet through the chaos, mess, and grind,
A mother’s love so fierce, you’re one of a kind.
A boss at work and queen at home,
Dear Mama on a mission, you’re not alone!

This month, I had the pleasure of writing an article for the Wacoan. As I wrote about the purpose and passion behind motherhood, and my experience as a working mom, the words to this poem came to mind. I share it to remind you that parenting is hard – so, don’t give up when the going gets tough! You are capable of so much more than you realize – and we’re all cheering for you!
