The end of summer always sneaks up on us. Personally, I can feel out of sorts without the school routine, but also enjoy the ambiguity of summer fun. One minute you’re soaking up the sunshine, the next you’re realizing that school starts in two weeks! Getting organized is key and here is a mom-approved back-to-school checklist to start your year with clarity and make the transition smooth (and maybe even a little fun).
Guide to Preschools & Private Schools in Waco
School Supplies: Beyond the list
- Backpack & Lunchbox – You may need to open them and give them a good clean, maybe even throw away snacks leftover from last year.
- Glue Sticks & Scissors – Because “Mom, I need it for tomorrow” usually happens at 8 p.m.
*Tip: Buy extras and stash them in your car for last-minute projects.
Clothing
- Everyday Outfits – My kids have gone through growth spurts this summer, so make sure they still fit.
- Shoes – Good luck keeping up with today’s trends!
I have learned as the kids get older, some of the dress code rules get very strict, so be sure to double check the rules and clothes!
Health & Wellness Prep
- Physicals & Immunizations – Check with your pediatrician before school starts.
- Vision & Dental Checks – Summer tends to be a great time to get dental work done and/or braces if needed.
- Lunch & Snack Plan – Stock up on easy, grab-and-go items so mornings run smoother. I usually try to plan 1 or 2 times a week to have the kids purchase the school lunch for my own sanity.

Home & Schedule Organization
- Calendars– have a plan on where to keep the master calendar with All.The.Things.
- Bedtime Routine – Start easing kids back into school sleep schedules before the first day (they’ll thank you later).
Emotional Prep
- First-Day Nerves – Talk through what to expect, especially if it’s a new school or grade.
- Back-to-School Traditions – A special breakfast, a photo, or a note in their lunchbox can make the day memorable. I am not great about this but love the idea and those that can pull it off!
Back-to-school doesn’t have to feel like chaos. With a little planning (and maybe an extra glue stick or two), you can kick off the year with less stress and more smiles—for everyone.
